ARE YOU SURE?! (part 2)
Romans 12:1-2
In a recent Movemental Bible Study session, Kwame Kilpatrick led a discussion on Romans 12:1-2. The focus was on the themes of sacrifice and transformation.
The core message focuses on “dying” to one’s old self. It also involves presenting one’s body as a living sacrifice to God [02:51:25]. Kilpatrick emphasizes that this isn’t a physical death. It is a separation from sinful ways. It is also a commitment to living for God [02:56:08]. He speaks directly about various sins. Despite God’s love, individuals must “die” to these practices. This is necessary to enter into a deeper relationship with Him [02:56:08]. He describes this as a “privilege.” He compares it to learning to swim by jumping into the deep end. It seems hard until you do it [03:22:22]. This concept is rooted in Romans 12:1. It urges you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice. It should be holy and pleasing to God. This is your true and proper worship.
A significant portion of the study focuses on the biblical instruction. It advises not to conform to the world. Instead, one should be transformed by the renewing of one’s mind [03:52:16]. Kilpatrick laments that believers often look and act too much like non-believers. This behavior blurs the lines and hinders the message of Christ [03:38:14]. He stresses that transformation (metamorphosis) is an internal, dynamic change. It occurs when one stops conforming to worldly customs. Continuous renewal of the mind through God’s word and prayer is essential [03:59:59]. This aligns with Romans 12:2: “Do not conform to the pattern of this world.” Be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.”
Kilpatrick highlights the enduring nature of the Bible. He asserts its consistent message over millennia. This holds true despite attempts to manipulate or alter it [02:16:16]. He shares his personal journey to Christ through the Book of Romans. He appreciates how Paul, the author, argued the text like a debater. It was compelling and clear [01:13:50].
The speaker encourages listeners to make a decisive commitment to God. He emphasizes that this decision leads to an “Abundant Life” (Zoe) [05:08:08]. He shares personal anecdotes from his time in prison. He illustrates how he chose to live as a “living sacrifice” even in confinement. He found purpose and joy by serving God [05:15:37]. He concludes his message by encouraging listeners to say “no” to worldly temptations. He assures them that freedom follows this challenging but necessary step [01:04:03].
