Titus was one of the apostle Paul’s sons in the ministry. Paul sent him to lead the churches on the island of Crete, and then he wrote this brief letter to equip Titus to effectively lead them in serving the body of Christ. Paul explained to Titus the importance of leadership, noting that part of Titus’s responsibility as a pastor and spiritual leader was to develop leaders who would help the church fulfill its role. This included encouraging the older men to disciple the younger men and the older women to disciple the younger women so that the members of the body of Christ could help one another grow.
Titus contains solid teaching on the importance of good works—those ministries that benefit the members of the church and others as well. It also includes instructions on the absolute necessity of teaching sound doctrine through the proclamation of God’s Word with both love and clarity. Two words summarize Paul’s message here: proclamation and coordination. Titus was to preach the Word and coordinate the ministry so that lives would be changed and God’s kingdom expanded.
