“Sticks and stones may break my bones but words can never hurt me.” This old adage has echoed through the ears of millions of children growing up. But this isn’t the case. Words do matter and they do hurt. Words can raise you up and they can take you down. Physical pain can be excruciating but society has taught us that mental and emotional pain should be ignored. The reality is that people, not just kids, all over the world have bullied or experienced bullying. To this day, bullying is amplified through social media and cyber-bullying is completely out of control. The problem is that not enough emphasis is being placed on empathy, compassion and self-esteem. Therefore, people resort to bullying as a way to feel better about themselves through putting others down. Contrary to popular belief, it is not only the victim of bullying that needs love and support but the bully as well.
