The Tragic Story of Mory and the “Love Mory Foundation”

Miss Scramble shares the heartbreaking story of her daughter, Mory, and the “Love Mory Foundation” she established in her memory. The foundation’s mission is to combat bullying, sexual abuse, and hazing within fraternities and sororities, with a particular focus on reaching out to young individuals considering joining these organizations.

Mory’s Life and Decline

Miss Scramble describes Mory as her only child, a happy, quiet, and loving young woman. Mory was a popular high school student, known for her radiant smile, respectfulness, and honesty. She shared a close bond with her mother, speaking daily even when away at college. Mory was pursuing a degree in dietetics, with a desire to care for her mother.

In 2019, Mory decided to pledge a sorority during her junior year at Southern Illinois University at Carbondale. Initially excited, she soon began to complain about the other girls and underwent a drastic change in personality. She reported being chased and isolated. By November and December, her behavior and attitude significantly declined, which she attributed to the sorority. She even called her mother, terrified, claiming people in black hoods were following her.

Trauma and Tragedy

Mory’s mental health deteriorated to the point where she had to withdraw from college and was admitted to a psychiatric ward. She was unable to graduate. Eventually, Mory confided in her mother, revealing that she had been raped and sexually abused. She exhibited disturbing behaviors, such as hitting herself in the head, stating that her abuser used to do that. These traumatic experiences led to Mory developing acute psychosis.

On November 16, 2022, Mory tragically died by suicide, hanging herself in her basement. Miss Scramble discovered videos on Mory’s phone where she expressed her desire to die and apologized to the “Greeks.” In a video recorded five days before her death, Mory questioned whether her condition was a result of sororities and fraternities.

The “Love Mory Foundation”

An email received by Miss Scramble from someone at the school confirmed Mory’s story, identifying a “ringleader” involved in the hazing. Miss Scramble believes that Mory’s trauma was entirely related to her sorority affiliation. Disappointed by the lack of support from the sorority (AKA), Miss Scramble started the “Love Mory Foundation” to advocate for mental health, abuse awareness, hazing prevention, and bullying awareness in collegiate and high school settings. Her goal is to create safe spaces and mentoring programs to prevent similar tragedies. She urges individuals facing similar struggles to seek help and encourages parents to take changes in their children seriously.
