Kirk Franklin wrote “In Love” for the film, “Joyful Noise” and performs it with Detroit’s Holy Vision Church choir, which is Pacashau’s arch-rival. Director Todd Graff describes the number as “really funky,” adding “Kirk dances like some version of Prince cross-bred with James Brown, but it’s all church music. It’s so charismatic and his band really cooks.”

Kirk Franklin’s nationwide “Fearless Tour” will visit fifteen states in four weeks. Special Guests will include Isaac Carree, BET Sunday Best Winner Amber Bullock and Verity Recording Artists Deon Kipping and Jason Nelson. The Fearless Tour will be sponsored in part by The American Heart Association.

The tour starts November 1, 2011 (see full listing of tour dates and cities below). Franklin will be touring in support of his 12th and latest CD, Hello Fear which debuted at #1 on Billboard’s Gospel sales chart and #5 on the Billboard Top-200. His single, “I Smile”, spent 23 weeks at #1 on Billboard’s Gospel Songs chart.

Franklin is especially passionate about performing songs from the Hello Fear project, as the specific message of facing our deep fears in this current economic situation and times of uncertainty in this life, have a deeper impact than ever before. His own life experiences, revelations and lessons learned bring him new motivation and inspiration to let these messages be heard.

Franklin is once again partnering with the American Heart Association’s “Power to End Stroke” campaign to increase awareness and to educate the African American community about their risk of stroke — the third leading cause of death of all Americans and a leading cause of long-term disability among African Americans. Franklin will use his voice to help his fans understand that stroke is largely preventable by watching your diet, getting regular exercise and not smoking. He will also share the importance of knowing your individual risk factors, such as family history, high blood pressure or diabetes, as well as working with health care providers to manage risk.

“I have learned so much. I want to take those lessons as well as my own experiences as a man who grew up with one foot in the church and one foot in the streets, and use that to connect with this generation.” Franklin aims to share these lessons with young, urban audiences while on the Fearless Tour.

Question of the Day: Is “Inspirational Song” Code Word For So Close to Secular You Can Barely Tell The Difference?

Over the past few months I have heard several Christian artist classify their music as being “Inspirational”. Some of them will then follow up this classification by saying they don’t want to be so Churchy that they can’t reach everyone. They want to draw people in by making them jam therefore taking some of the intimidation factor out of the Gospel. Some will even go as far as to say that for them traditional gospel doesn’t work.

However what I want to ask you is what are they really saying? For example both Mary Mary and Trin-I-Tee 5:7 have recently released albums that they are calling Inspirational. Now let it be known that I have not heard all of either of these albums and while “Walking” by Mary Mary is not my cup of tea, they still sing my favorite rendition of “Yesterday”. Yet I still have to ask the Kirk’s and Ty’s of the world is this your way of skating really close to the line of secular without actually crossing it? Is there a difference in the content of Gospel and Inspirational music that will make one classify it as one over the other? Think about it, some classified “I Can Fly” by R. Kelly as Inspirational, yet I wouldn’t consider it a gospel song. The same with Christina Aguilera “You Are Beautiful” or Pink’s song “Perfect”. All three of these songs inspire people and make them feel good about themselves, but they do not teach the word of God.

So what do you think? Is the term Inspirational being used as a get out of Sanctuary card that artist can use when they want to get their groove on? Is it a term that is being used in a more clever way, that will allow the songs to be played on all stations so that they can reach more listeners? Are they the same or two different genres of music.
